The Alan Fox Band: Classic Sound, Modern Rock

By Kimber Fountain April 28, 2015

Any attempts to rigidly define the genre known as “Classic Rock” are about as futile as trying to
    label the
corners of a circle. The lines are blurred from the get-go with the word “classic,”
which implies music from a specific time period – in this case the 1960s and 70’s – but there was
a lot of music made in that time frame that does not even breach the border of consideration as
Classic Rock. To add to the confusion, some have chosen to broaden that generational window as
time has passed, furthermore, even select, modern bands who exude the Classic Rock sound
(whatever that is) have been labeled as such, although the parameters used are widely open
    for interpretation and personal taste.

alan fox band eguide tyler tx 1In fact, pretty much the only thing that can be said definitively
about this particular genre is that ‘you know it when you hear it.’ But if dusting off your
uncle’s old vinyl sounds about as appealing as turning the dial on an antique radio in a valiant
attempt to get that needle exactly where it needs to be to pick up the 70’s radio station,
never fear. The Alan Fox Band can singlehandedly fulfill all of your Classic Rock curiosities
from the comfort of the 21st century.

That being said, the first thing that must be established about the Alan Fox Band is that their
output would be much more aptly described as a revival, as opposed to a replication, or
regurgitation of the hits of years past – which it is not. “We play it how we feel it,”
says guitarist Donnie Pendleton. “We don’t try to emulate anyone else. [Our music] definitely
has a Classic Rock vein, but,” he adds emphatically, “it is modern music.” In other words,
these guys have a sound that was created from the inside-out; an assemblage of experienced
and proficient musicians produce fresh and original tracks with a nostalgic alacrity that
takes classic and makes it timeless.

Originally formed in 2000, The Alan Fox Band is a five-piece band comprised of members from
all over northeast Texas. Namesake and founder Alan Fox is from Carthage and performs as a
guitarist and vocalist, as does Donnie Pendleton, who hails from Fort Worth and has been with
the band for over ten years. Donny Hart, the Lead Vocalist from Arlington, is the newest member
with a still-impressive tenure of three years, and his time is matched by current drummer Terry Salyer
out of Kilgore. Bass Player Greg Cagle from Palestine completes the lineup with his sixth year as
a member of AFB. “We all knew each other from previous projects, gigs, and venues,” says Pendleton,
who later explains that in the band’s earlier years, “it was Blues Rock.” As the band absorbed the
talents and influences of Hart, Greg, and Terry, their sound evolved and began to evoke the deeper
harmonies and more striking melodies of Classic Rock.

alan fox band eguide tyler tx 2Each member is an established musician in their own right,
and each will attest that the band’s music is really a reflection of many different sounds,
a collaboration of their individual talents and techniques which results in the whole being
even greater than the sum of its parts. Of course, a firm foundation is necessary to support
such a cacophony of talent, and for The Alan Fox Band that foundation is an innate cohesion
that exists among all of the members. “We are greater as a unit, [which is] the reason that
this band functions as well as it does,” explains Donny Hart. “ It is because we are old enough
to be past all of the stuff that tears other bands apart.” Greg adds to this, remarking that,
“there is no ego in the band, we record well together, we play well together, we all have the
same work ethic.” This proves advantageous especially considering that no two members live in
the same town, a fact which does not at all hinder the band’s progress or professionalism.

Donnie Pendleton describes the phenomena that naturally occurs in the band’s work.
“It tends to motivate itself – it has an energy of its own. When I sit down with Donny
[to write songs], things happen.” Greg agrees, “Anytime we are in pre-production for new material,
I get excited. Just listening to rough cuts, is very gratifying.” Donny also says of Alan Fox that,
“he makes huge contributions. When we have song ideas, he’ll have a hook or a perspective that
makes it happen.” Often, the song-writing process is fleshed out in live rehearsals, as they
allow inspiration to fill in the melodies and bass lines. In fact, Greg admits that often they
“put stuff together so ‘off the cuff’ that I’ll say to myself, ‘I gotta sit down and learn that.’”

Alan Fox Band released the album “JuJu Ear Rub” in 2008, and their live performances have expanded
far beyond the local dive to the national festival circuit. Then in 2013, the band was given huge
honors at the L.A. Music Awards, a nationwide red-carpet media event that was founded in 1991 to
increase exposure to the independent music scene. That year, the band was named “Hard Rock Band of the Year”
and Donnie Pendleton was awarded “Guitarist of the Year.” Currently they are putting together a
new album to be released in its entirety in the fall of this year, but they are taking a different
approach with its release. “Our strategy this time has been to let [each song] out as a single as it is
completed,” explains Greg, “and then we will release a collection of those on a CD.”

Most importantly, the band’s song-writing reaches to all of the depths and heights that their musical
prowess can take them. “Our lyrics mean something,” says Hart. “We tell stories, [the music] feels how we all
sometimes feel – heavy and bluesy.” Full-length versions of two of AFB’s most recent singles are available for
free on ReverbNation.com. Produced by Aaron Avenue Records, “El Cabron” and “Redemption” are quintessential
Classic Rock ballads which perfectly showcase the band’s electric and powerful live performances,
punctuated by the crisp and clean wails of Donny Hart that can be heard all the way back in 1973.
AFB is endorsed by Curt Mangan Strings.com, and Donnie Pendleton is endorsed by

    Alan Fox Band Breaks Out!

Our News On World News dot com

Donnie Pendleton performs at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood.

    Posted: Thursday, November 28, 2013 4:45 am
    By Glenn Evans gevans@news-journal.com

A band that once rocked Longview is poised to take its next step after earning two
awards in Hollywood for its twin-guitar power sound.
“We’re so very, very excited. Better things just keep coming,” Alan Fox, founder of
The Alan Fox Band, said after returning home to Carthage from the Los Angeles Music Awards
where the five-man combo was named Hard Rock Band of the Year. “I would have been happy
with just Donnie getting Guitarist of the Year.”

That would be guitarist Donnie Pendleton, now based in Fort Worth, but who lived in
downtown Longview while the band played successive AlleyFests.

The group, which formed in Longview with remnants of local powerhouses such as U.S. Lords,
has continued to evolve since moving its base of operations to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
A brief flirtation with singer Bubba Keith of Point Blank fame has ended, but the original
lineup largely remains intact as the group plays regular gigs at Mambo’s Tapas Cantina in
    downtown Cowtown.

It’s a far cry from the garages that gave birth to rock ‘n’ roll dreams for Fox, Pendleton,
bassist Greg Cagle, drummer Terry Salyer and vocalist Donny Hart, formerly of Arlington-based Pantera.
“Most people give up. It’s hard,” Pendleton, 52, said of staying focused on a longshot musical
career while, in his case, working as a mechanic and raising a family with the girlfriend he
married at age 18, Vicki McBride Pendleton.

The Fort Worth native, who moved home from Longview to be near his mother, Susi McDaniel,
still calls the guitar his drug of choice.
“I don’t believe that if I wasn’t out playing professionally that I would be happy,”
Pendleton said. “If I tried to settle down, and be like everybody else and get a
job and do the whole retirement thing and build a 401k, that I would have this joy in my life.
I toured back in the hair band days and suffered through all of that. I wasn’t making any money,
my wife staying home with the children while I was touring. I got kind of disgruntled with
the whole music scene. It was never going to be like I expected.”

On Nov. 14, though, Pendleton, Fox and the rest found themselves giving multiple red carpet
interviews and later performing on the same Hollywood stage that once welcomed The Beatles.
“Standing on the stage at the at the Avalon Theater, if you had told me six months ago that
was going to happen, I’d have told you you were crazy,” Pendleton said. “I kept crying — absolutely,
I always will. You don’t have to worry about me changing my mind. I’m always going to play.”
Fox recalled paying dues in the Longview area before the band relocated.
“A few years back, we really had oversaturated ourselves in the Longview area,” he said.
“We were playing three and four nights a week at one time, and hosting jams at Mom’s (Biker Bar).
But, we stopped all of that and stayed true to our roots and booking rallies and festivals.”
The band’s roots are in power rock, driven by dual lead guitars and NO slick synthesizers or
    detours into ‘what’s new.’

“We’re the kind of band that doesn’t have gimmicks,” Pendleton said. “We just play music.
We have harmony and melodies and harmony guitar, and we’re freaking loud.”

And, with collective decades of studio, stage and touring experience, they’re tight.
The band’s latest single, ‘Never Learn,’ is part of four-song package of original songs
the band laid down at Code Studio in Arlington.

The single is available for download from CD Baby, ITunes, Rhapsody and at alanfoxband.com.
“We’re working on a full-length album for the label, Aaron Avenue Records,” Pendleton said,
referring to the outfit that sponsored the band in Los Angeles.
Fox said the band will soon meet with the label to discuss their mutual futures.

Palestine musician receives East Texas Music Award

    By CHERIL VERNON Palestine Herald-Press
PALESTINE — Palestine’s Greg Cagle was named the East Texas Music Award’s 2013
Bassist of the Year last week.

Cagle, 47, is a member of The Alan Fox Band of Fort Worth, a Texas original
heavy blues/rock band which has East Texas connections. Cagle moved to
Palestine in 1995, where he lives with his wife and daughter.

“I always thank the Lord Jesus for my blessings, because he is my Lord and Savior,”
Cagle told the Herald-Press when asked how he felt about receiving the award.
“The band has really been blessed. We have had a lot of things come our way this
year and we are really looking forward to what lies in the future.”

Band members besides Cagle include Alan Fox of Carthage, Donnie Pendleton of Fort Worth,
Donny Hart of Arlington and Terry Salyer of Kilgore. The band is represented and
sponsored by Aaron Avenue Records in Texas.

Pendleton won Guitarist of the Year last year, and Cagle said that award moved the band up.
He hopes this award will do the same.

“It’s a group project. Yes, I won, but this moves the Alan Fox Band forward as a unit.
I’m really happy for the band because it affords us more notoriety,” Cagle said.

The band also received three other nominations from the East Texas Music Award:
Blues Band of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year (Hart) and Guitarist of the Year (Pendleton).

The Alan Fox Band already has planned a trip to Los Angeles this Thursday for the
23rd Annual Los Angeles Music Awards, where they were nominated this summer for four awards.
The band has been nominated for “Music Group of the Year” and “Hard Rock Band of the Year”
with Hart nominated for “Male Vocalist” and Pendleton taking the nomination for
    “Guitarist of the Year.”
The band will get the opportunity to perform at the 23rd Annual Los Angeles Music Awards
at the world-famous Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood, and also at the Avalon Theater in
Hollywood during the awards night Nov. 14. The Los Angeles Music Awards is open to
independent artists and bands who are unsigned or on independent (“indie”) labels.
“Whiskey A Go Go is a thing of legend to people like us. All of our heroes — the bands we looked up to — they
played that stage,” Cagle told the Herald-Press. “So, yes, our shoes are going to be hot when we perform there.”
The band’s latest single and video releases “She Makes Me Hot” and “Do Me”
are receiving airplay in the U.S. and abroad, both available on iTunes and CD Baby.
The band’s newest tracks include “Never Learn” and “El Cabron.”
While the band has been around for more than a decade, the current lineup started
building in late 2005, according to band members.

About the Los Angeles Music Awards

In 1991, Bill Gazzarri known as the “Godfather of Rock n’ Roll” named Al Bowman the “Godson of Rock n’ Roll”
and Gazzarri asked Bowman to produce a music awards show for independent artists and bands requesting that he
“make it about the music. Just ‘cuz people buy it, don’t make it good,” Gazzarri said.

Bowman promised Gazzarri that he would produce an annual awards show in his honor and Gazzarri gave Bowman his
famous white Fedora hat. Three days later, Gazzarri passed away.

On Dec. 17, 1991 the Los Angeles Music Awards held its first ever awards ceremony and it was dedicated to the
memory of Gazzarri. The 2013 event will be the 22nd annual show.

For three decades, Gazzarri, was known as Sunset Boulevard's white-hatted “Godfather of Rock n’ Roll,” because
his night clubs on The Strip provided a stage and amplification for a myriad undiscovered rock stars, and he

unabashedly claimed credit for launching the careers of Jim Morrison and The Doors, Sonny and Cher, Motley Crue,
Tina Turner, Van Halen, David Lee Roth, The Byrds, Poison, Guns N' Roses and Warrant, to name a few.

6th Annual T-Bone Walker Blues Fest
    June 17-18, 2011, Linden, Texas

Music City Texas Theater in Linden, Texas is hosting
    the 6th Annual T-Bone Walker Blues Fest - June 17 & 18.
The festival is being presented by MetroPCS and other
key sponsors: Don Henley, MidSouth Engine & Machine,
Linden Economic Development Corporations, and the
Good Shepherd Medical Center. The event will bring in
13 top blues artists from across the nation, and will be
headlined by its first international blues star.
The headliners – Matt Schofield, David "Honeyboy" Edwards,
Robin & the Bluebirds and the Alan Fox Band . The 6th annual
festival is a fundraiser for two Linden non-profit corporations:
Music City Texas Theater, a music venue, and the Fairview
Community Center which offers free literacy and computer
    training to the community.

This two-day, two-stage festival is a living memorial to the
music icon that was a primary influence to most postwar blues
guitarists and early rock and roll greats. T-Bone Walker’s most
enduring legacy was taking the guitar from a rhythm instrument
to a lead instrument in a band. Honored by his peers by membership
in the Blues Heritage Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
he was first, and foremost, a loving father, a humanitarian, and
    a friend to so many.

Friday, June 17 will feature a Free outdoor concert focused on students
learning about the Blues. Underwritten by the International Paper Company,
AEP-Southwestern Electic Power Company and Colonel & Mrs. Robert Spivey
of Atlanta, Texas, the show will open with The Matthew Davidson Band -
the 13 year-old Shreveport guitar prodigy who was in the 2011 International
Blues Challenge Youth Showcase. Then, the Pleasant Hill Quilting Group
will present the history of the Underground Railroad Quilt Code; followed
by a great new group – The Ominous Anonymous. The free concert is headlined
by the stellar regional artists –
    The Alan Fox Band.

Opening indoors in the Music City Texas Theater is Marshall’s Boogie Woogie
Ambassador Omar Sharriff. Omar has been packing the house in weekly concerts
since his return to his hometown.

From Los Angeles, California, the Midwestern Icons feature former Lawrence,
Kansas musician and Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductee Bill Lynch along
with his stellar rhythm section featuring Rick Moors on bass and the
legendary drummer James Gadson. Lynch has gigged with various artists
including Jerry Lee Lewis and Bo Diddley and has been joined on stage
by Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mike Finnigan, Billy Preston,
Ike Turner, James Cotton and countless others. James Gadson has
recorded with an endless list of artists including Ray Charles,
Marvin Gaye, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, Herbie Hancock,
The Temptations, Quincy Jones, Norah Jones, Paul McCartney, and
    Justin Timberlake.

David "Honeyboy" Edwards is an icon in the world of Blues. A member
of the Blues Heritage Hall of Fame, multi-honoree as Blues Acoustic
Artist of the Year and multi-Grammy winner, "Honeyboy" represents the
    best of traditional blues.

Honeyboy is accompanied by Michael Frank on harmonica and Rocky Lawrence
on guitar. Michael Frank is a receipient of the Blues Heritage
"Keeping the Blues Alive" award and Founder/CEO of Chicago’s Earwig Music.
Mr. Lawrence currently tours the country educating University students
on the historical significance of the Robert Johnson songbook as it
relates to the history of popular music worldwide.

Now firmly established as the freshest and most exciting blues guitarist
to have emerged on the world scene for many years, Matt Schofield recently
joined such luminary names as Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson and Robben Ford,
who have DVDs produced by the world's largest music print publisher,
the US-based Hal Leonard organisation. Schofield is one of the few Brits
ever to have appeared on the Hal Leonard imprint.

He is rated in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time
(Guitar & Bass Magazine) putting him in the company of such iconic
names as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. He was also crowned Blues Guitarist
and Album of the year in the 2010 British Blues Awards. Matt Schofield
will headline both nights on the Music City Texas stage.

The lineup is rounded out by DieDra and the Ruff Pro Band from Birmingham,
Alabama, Shreveport’s Buddy Flett, Austin’s rising blues stars –
The Peterson Brothers Band (another 2011 IBC Youth Showcase member),
Marshall’s Bobbie Oliver and Jam City Revue, and from New Orlean’s –
    The Ezra Charles Band.

This year’s festival will be associated with a "Bikers and Blues Run" on Saturday.
Information on the biker’s run and games may be found on the festival website.

There will be vendors and food/drink on-site.

    the past couple of years.
"We had been playing anywhere from 170-200 jobs a year," Fox,
the band's namesake, said of the latest incarnation of the band
he founded 10 years ago. "But, we haven't had any type of
avenue to expand to the next level till Bubba got interested
    in us. And he's a world-class artist."
A Denton-raised musician who reached the genre's pinnacle as lead
singer and songwriter for bands such as The James Gang, Point Blank
and England Dan and John Ford Coley, Keith left rock in 1985.
His 1981 hit, "Nicole," was an upbeat power ballad that filled
stadiums in the arena rock era.
His union with Fox's twin guitar-driven band this past summer blew
open a door both sides were looking to walk through.
"The band thing is still in formulation," bass player Greg Cagle
said, during an Oct. 3 group interview with Keith, who lives with
his family in Glen Rose. "This is the fifth time, or the sixth time,
all of us have been in the same room."
Keith, who said he hung up his leathers when he heard his wife tell
their kids, "Oh, that's road daddy," was looking for a good fit as
he contemplated getting back into the life. He missed the band experience.
"The thing about writing and going to the studio, and stuff like
that — it's more of a solitary act," said Keith, 60. "I always continued
to write. ... But to be able to share it with other people, there's
only one way you can do that. ... The James Gang, Point Blank and my
new stuff, it's not just pigeonholing one thing. It gives us a chance
to cover all the spectrum — not just songs I've written and these guys
have written but new songs as well."
The timing was right for Fox's outfit, which has been steering itself
away from cover band land in favor of original tunes.
"What we've been trying to do is play originals with our own voice,"
said Donnie Pendleton, the twin to Fox in the band's dual-lead guitar sound.
"And finally, in the last couple of years it's started to form."
Pendleton, 49, grew up in east Fort Worth, next door to Arlington where
Keith's mother ran the Candlelight Inn restaurant. He was the band's
link to Keith, by way of a dinner with his wife, Vicki.
The pair met in 1980 when Pendleton had to leave the table to investigate
the music he heard coming from a storage building behind the Arlington
eatery — Keith and the band were rehearsing. Flash forward to the Facebook
era: Keith quotes Mr. Rogers on his Wall, "It's a beautiful day in the
neighborhood. Won't you be my friend?" and Pendleton commented back,
"Won't you be in my band?"
The band still performs as a four-man outfit, with a show set for 9 p.m.
today at Leon's Steakhouse Saloon on South Eastman Boulevard. The full
group, which is billing itself as Bubba Keith and the Alan Fox Band,
played the Oldest Town in Texas Rally in Nacogdoches last month. The
five-some comes together again in Dallas on Nov. 14 at a memorial concert
for Jay Hamilton, a keyboardist who played with Pendleton in the
    eighties hair band, The Cause.
Leaving Texas for California in 1969, Keith dove into the Sunset Strip
rock scene on legendary stages such as the Whiskey-a-Go-Go. He was playing
in Hollywood when Eric Burdon of The Animals signed him to the indie label,
Far Out Productions. During the 17 years before Keith returned to Texas,
he would handle lead vocals for a succession of rock 'n' roll hit-makers.
"Oh, I knew I was in the bigtime," he said. "I knew when I was 14 this
was what I was going to do. It's just like any other job — I loved playing,
and knew I was going to play any way I could. ... Most people don't fail,
they quit. You've got to be willing to say, yes. Some of the best musicians
I know ... are still in bars. When you write a song and you make it really
good, and it's tearing your heart out, it takes guts to get up there and play it."
Still, Keith was wary about getting back into live music.
"I didn't want people at the local Holiday Inn seeing me trying to squeeze
into my black leathers," he said. "It's better that people say, 'I wonder
what Bubba's doing?' rather than, 'Oh, he shouldn't be doing that.' To me,
great rock bands — there's something about them, this connection that you
get with people. Sometimes we're playing together, all five of us, and I
just feel my feet coming off the floor."
That's language Fox, 54, understood. "I just call it swimming in a sea of tone," he said.
Pendleton said the band's newest member is finding an out-of-retirement
home with the group. "We were wanting to step things up a notch," he said.
"I don't think there's a better vocalist around. But, I think we are all
from the same school. ... I wanted him to do it, and I guess he still does
or he wouldn't have driven down here just to talk about it."

The Alan Fox Band, originally formed in 2000 by
frontman Alan Fox, has built up their reputation
and their repertoire to become one of the most
noteworthy blues/arena rock bands in East Texas.
On the strength of a highly active tour schedule
and their most recent album, 2008's full length
JuJu Ear Rub, TAFB have been steadily building
their profile. The dual guitar onslaught provided
by Alan Fox and Donnie Pendleton drives their
distinctive Texas blues sound, while drummer
Moe Eldridge and bassist Greg Cagle sit in the
pocket, propelling their tunes along. The band's
reverence for their heroes - Thin Lizzy,
the Allman Brothers, and Ted Nugent - is obvious
from their skill at incorporating those classic
sounds into their own unique sound.
The Alan Fox Band are a dedicated, talented
group of musicians playing out as often as they
can, building their fan base one show at a time.

Twin guitar leads tell audiences this ain’t no disco
when The Alan Fox Band is on stage.
In fact, the only thing remotely BeeGees about the
four-man power combo from Longview is that it’s staying
alive. Founder Fox formed the band a decade ago,
but four years ago he began to assemble today’s group
from musicians with lifetimes of stage experience.

"People are seeing that there is a need for the arena
rock genre, Fox, 53, said recently. Arena/Rock is good-time rock."
Arena rock, for those who don't remember when yield
signs were yellow, blasted metal guitar and heavy
percussion across football stadiums in the
seventies where it washed through young Baby Boomers
rebelliously long hair. It stood for wild youth and
against the controlled, front-end commercial beat of
the disco era. Bands such as Foghat, Thin Lizzy and Boston helped
set the tone for arena rock, and their sounds were in
force when Fox rode a voice scholarship
to Stephen F. Austin State University.

Having an opportunity, Alan left college
to write and play music, opening for Stevie Ray Vaughan at
the famed Crossroads in Nacogdoches. Fox moved to
Shreveport where he helped found a group that became
a college fan favorite in Texas and well beyond, the Killer Beez.

He met Donnie Pendleton heady years later, finding a
fellow lover of power guitar commanding the
stage with an emerging regional headliner, U.S. Lords.
A guitar player from childhood, Pendleton previously
had made noise with a big-haired, eighties, glam outfit, The Cauze.

"We said we always wanted to be in a band that was
    using twin leads," Fox recalled.
Pendleton joined the Fox project in 2006.

    Lifelong drummer Morris "Moe"
Eldridge of Marshall signed on a year later, and
today's band finally gelled when bassist Greg Cagle of
Palestine jumped on board last fall.

The Alan Fox Band stays busy. The group opened for
Foghat at AlleyFest last year before launching a tour
of festivals. The front man estimates the band is
on pace to play 200-225 gigs this year.

That included Sunday night open jams at Mom's Biker Bar
until about a month ago when Eldridge says finances
forced him and co-owner Cherry Lynn Power, whom
he'll wed next month, to kill the engine. The Sunday
night sessions, in which fellow rockers are welcome
to sit in, swiftly moved to Fast Freddy's on West Marshall Avenue.
That's where the foursome could be found this past
Sunday, in jeans and black T-shirts contrasted only
by the fluorescent orange laces on Fox's sneakers.

    It weren't no disco.
Cover songs, including East Texas native T-Bone
Walker's, "Stormy Monday," filled the wood-paneled room,
complemented by originals from the outfit's 2008 release,
"JuJu Ear Rub," and a CD in the works, "Now Ear This."
The originals, in particular, highlighted the twin
lead sound Fox and Pendleton heard in their minds'
ears when they met. They included an instrumental
conversation between the two players, trading
musical sentences in an upbeat key in the
tradition of the Almond Brothers', "Jessica."

Songs with lyrics showcased either Fox's powerful,
sometimes gravely rasp, or Pendleton's slightly
    sweeter vocal style.
The band relented the stage briefly to a couple of
younger players, drummer Eldridge staying to back up
the kids. He was waiting behind
the skins when The Alan Fox Band returned.
They did not play anything from, "Saturday Night Fever."

"We play songs that everybody out there is not
    playing," Eldridge said.
"I love it. I have to play music"

    "Friday After 5 Concert"
    features the Alan Fox Band
    in Kilgore, Texas
    By BRENDA BROWN knhedit@kilgorenewsherald.com

July's "Friday After 5" concert will feature ways
to beat the summer heat while enjoying some fine
music. Fallon Burns, Main Street program manager,
said her board or directors opted to rent a "huge,
two-person water slide," along with some small pools
to keep kids of all ages cool on Friday night
at the World's Richest Acre Park.
"Kids three and younger won't be able to use
the water slide, so we decided to get some baby
pools for them," Burns said. Clowns will also be
on hand to entertain the crowd and create balloon
    art for concertgoers.
The Alan Fox Band, known for its blues, classic
and original rock performances, kicks off at
6:30 p.m. on the Winter Elder Stage. The show is free,
as are all of the activities.

"They're a fabulous band," Burns said. "They played
at AlleyFest and they were awesome. We were really
lucky to get them. They play music everyone knows
and loves, so you can bring anybody out and they
    can appreciate it."

The Alan Fox Band was picked as a 2005 first-year
national finalist at the Sonny Boy Blues Challenge,
earning the right to perform at the
    King Biscuit Blues Festival.
"We wanted the Fourth of July to be special and we
wanted this to be a family affair, so come
downtown on Friday night and enjoy," said Burns.

heroes like The Alan Fox Band and Ricky Lynn Gregg
and Friends, the latter opening for '70s
    rockers Foghat on Saturday
